Turmeric has historically been used to support the liver and stimulate bile. According to the University of Maryland Medical Centre, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study confirmed the effectiveness of turmeric in reducing bloating and gas in patients with indigestion. Some sources believe that only 60% of turmeric is absorbed and it should be taken with the proteolytic enzyme bromelain to enhance absorption.
Bromelain (the proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples) blocks the production of kinins in the body (pain chemicals). Bromelain has a wide PH range that means that it can aid digestion in the stomach and small intestine. It is helpful for pancreatic insufficiency. In 1970 a study in the British Journal of Medicine showed that bromelain was successfully used as a digestive aid with patients who had their pancreas removed.
Betaine HCL is included as this combination is designed as a long-term support for the elderly or anybody with decreased stomach acid. The betaine and hydrochloric acid separate in the stomach allowing the hydrochloric acid to help break down proteins. The absorption of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron are dependent on correct levels of stomach acid. Hydrochloric acid is also necessary to activate an enzyme known as pepsin which is required to break down the proteins that we eat.
Choline aids in the digestion of fats, contributing to normal lipid metabolism. Choline also is necessary for normal liver function
